History

In order to propagate the mission of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the Sants of Shiromani Dera Sant Pura Nangali Sahib, Poonch (Jammu & Kashmir state) served the people of this state in particular and the entire humanity in general through religious discourses and by opening Educational Institutions, Technical Ashrams and Deras, where free langer is served and education imparted to all. Just after 1947, when large population of state was displaced, the then Mahant Sahib of this Dera, Sant Bhai Bachittar Singh Ji opened hostels in Jammu and Tral (Kashmir) for students so that they might be able to continue their Education in schools and colleges. He had also established Sant Rocha Singh Ji Technical Ashram at Baramula (Kashmir) and Sant Mela Singh Ji Technical Ashram at Digiana (Jammu), for poor youth who could learn vocations like carpentry, cutting, tailoring, printing, spinning and weaving and classical music for singing Gurbani, to earn their livelihood. Successor to Mahant Bachittar Singh Ji is Mahant Manjit Singh Ji. He is serving the humanity with same zeal. He has established Mahant Bachittar Singh College of Engineering and Technology at Babliana, Jammu and upgraded Guru Harkrishan Public School, Nanak Nagar, Jammu to 10+2 level. He has also opened a branch of Guru Harkrishan Public School at Poonch, Guru Hargobind Public School at Nowshera and MMS Indian Public School at Simbal Camp, Jammu.

As the Education is spreading at fast rate in J&K state and there is demand of trained graduates to cater to the needs of the educational institutions, Sant Manjit Singh Ji with his vision and Zeal to serve humanity, felt the necessity of opening College of Education as a gesture of goodwill to help the Education system in the State. He dedicated this college to the memory of the bicentenary celebrations of the establishment of Dera and named it after Sant Mela Singh Ji who established this Dera (Abode of Sants) at Poonch in the year 1803 A.D. Thus Sant Mela Singh College of Education was established in the Year 2003 at Digiana-Jammu.
